I Want To Let You In On A Little Secret

The story I am writing exists, written in absolutely perfect fashion, some place, in the air. All I must do is find it, and copy it. ~Jules Renard, “Diary,” February 1895

I love this quote. This is how I have felt since day one of writing my Flashback series. That the story is out there, that it exists because I can see it in my mind and it is simply a matter of bringing it to life. I’ll let you in on a little secret, this is a challenge that I felt I could meet with confidence on some days, and on other days I would find the challenge insurmountable. I’m sure other writers go through this when they put pen to paper, in a manner of speaking.

When I saw this quote I remembered how I felt when I first started writing. I was excited, but I was also terrified that the story in my head could never be translated to paper to my satisfaction. I’m happy to say that I overcame the challenge of breathing life into the tale, and after writing two of the four stories in the series I’m now in the process of publishing them.

I’ve hit another challenge. The publishing process seems long and arduous and I find myself wishing I were back to the first challenge of writing the perfect story that existed only in my head. I am positive that in a month I will be faced with yet another challenge that appears daunting, and I will look back at the publishing one with fond memories.

I raise my glass to the perfect, ethereal story. I could use a drink on the long road to bringing it to life.
